Researchers Want You To Catch The Ticks You Find On You And Your Pets

As you probably already know, ticks do not dwell in every US state. In fact, the tick is largely limited to the northern areas of the United States, but they can be found farther south, especially in Midwestern regions. So when it comes to studying ticks, researchers often rely on the public to provide specimens for them.

The Maine Medical Center Research Institute along with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, are encouraging the general public to collect tick specimens from the areas where they live in order to send them in to proper health officials. This will help public health officials to better map the spread of Lyme disease.

Sometimes the maps that result from carefully collected tick specimens can lead to knowledge regarding tick movement. This knowledge allows researchers to notify the proper public health officials of a Lyme disease risk before the disease arrives. Cases of Lyme disease are only increasing each year, and every single county in Maine alone has residents that experience the negative effects of Lyme disease regularly in some way or another.

Should You Take The Risk To Rescue A Raccoon That May Die Otherwise?

It is not uncommon for people to spot raccoons near small bodies of water, and sometimes they can get themselves into troubling situations that may cost raccoons their lives. There have been numerous reports made to animal control centers across the United States that describe situations where raccoons seemed trapped on all sides by water during floods and heavy downpours. The question is, should you go out of your way to help a raccoon that is surrounded by violent waves?

One wildlife specialist insists that it is rarely, if ever, necessary to assist a raccoon that looks to be in need of a hand. The fact is, although many people do not realize this, is that floodplains are a raccoons natural habitat, and by gravitating towards areas heavy in water, raccoons are only doing what is natural to them. Even if  a raccoon looks to be scared and cold, it does not need our help as it is perfectly adapted at dealing with situations involving heavy water. All in all, rescue missions for raccoons, would likely become an even more dangerous situation for everyone involved.

Some Possum Species Are In Danger Of Becoming Extinct From Mass Logging Operations

These days, as a result of climate change it seems as though every animal is approaching extinction. One such animal that is endangered of becoming extinct is the leadbeater possum. As a result of decades of logging forests, the leadbetter is, without a doubt, becoming extinct. In fact, experts estimate that if the logging industry continues to disregard the natural habitat of many forest dwelling animals, the leadbetter will become extinct within the next thirty years easily.

Many experts agree that many endangered forest dwelling animals can be saved by simply expanding the areas that are currently preserved for the well being of animal wildlife. If the logging continues researchers believe that the leadbeater possum will be the first forest dwelling animal to become extinct as a direct result of the destructive force that is the logging industry. Some of the world’s leading wildlife experts are currently pushing for policies that will allow for the expansion of certain areas where forest wildlife is guaranteed to continue without being impeded by modern industry.

Frog Spit Is Designed to Trap Insects

We all know that frogs like to eat insects. The iconic image of a frog quickly grabbing on to some passing flying insect with its long tongue is probably seared into all of our brains. How do those tongues seem to make insects stick to them like glue? What you might not have known is that frog spit actually has some amazing properties that help it catch it’s food.

It all comes down to frog spit. This fluid doesn’t act like your normal fluids, but rather takes on different properties at different times. A frog’s spit can actually change from normal thin fluid to a glue-like substance in an instant. This is the real secret behind their amazing ability to catch insects straight out of the air. The two different fluids each have their own purpose when it comes to catching bugs. When the frog catches an insect with its tongue the saliva is still thin, and the contact area actually becomes bigger as the bug hits the tongue. That thin liquid then oozes around the insect, trapping it on the frog’s tongue. As the tongue retracts the saliva get thicker and becomes a glue-like substance, conveniently trapping the bug that is now covered in it. That’s some pretty amazing spit if you ask me!

A New Kitchen Appliance Is Able To Breed Mealworms For Eating

It may be too early to tell how well people living in the western parts of the world will respond to the global push to convince westerners to eat insects. However, even though your friends and neighbors may not have adopted the bug-eating fad yet, many entrepreneurs and investors cannot contain their excitement towards this new growing industry. For example, two enterprising twentysomethings, Katharina Unger and Julia Kaisinger, have recently developed a method that allows consumers to breed their own insects for consumption.

According to the two young entrepreneurs, the breeding device will allow consumers to breed up to five hundred grams of mealworms in just one week. Apparently those who purchase this kitchen bug farm are supposed to freeze their mealworms and then cook them when the time is right.

With this bug-breeding kitchen appliance lucky owners can cook their bugs like hamburger patties, or roast them, or you could blend your tasty mealworms with pasta sauce. It is good to hear that the free market has finally offered consumers a bug farm for their culinary needs.

Monstrous Invertebrates That Eat Vertebrates

For the most part we humans think of vertebrate animals (animals with a spine) as being the ones that eat invertebrates (animals without a spine). That’s why it is particularly disturbing when we see smaller invertebrates eating large vertebrates such as a snake chomping down a whole rabbit or…human. Well, the insect world has quite a few invertebrates that break the rules and eat animals that seem way too big for them to choke down. And some of these vertebrate-eating insects have been breaking records with the large-sized meals they’ve been eating lately.

This past April some dragonfly larvae in Brazil surprised scientists around the world by being the first ever seen eating adult frogs. These voracious larvae are known for being aggressive predators of tadpoles, but no one ever thought they would also go after the adults. The story is just as terrifying as it sounds too. These hungry tots climb all the way out of their ponds and onto water plants, where they then lay in wait for an adult frog to come walking by, and then jump on them and immediately begin eating them alive.

Those baby dragonflies aren’t the only vicious predators of vertebrates. The Scolopendra centipede, which can grow to over 30 centimeters long, are known for the powerful set of fangs called forcipules at the front of their bodies, which are actually modified front legs. These guys go after cave-dwelling bats, scuttling onto the ceiling of the caves they hang from and latching onto a dozen bat’s legs while they’re hanging upside down. Now that is something that would terrify even the manliest of men.

Dandelion Growth May Be On The Rise To Save Several Insect Species From Extinction

Everybody hates weeds, and dandelions are certainly weeds. Dandelions do not seem good for much, they are not too pretty and a bundle of dandelions would disappoint any prospective date. However, dandelions are good for many things, such as keeping us alive.

Many city planners make efforts to remove dandelions from city property, especially where residents congregate. City planners and council members also institute measures to remove dandelions regularly because they attract a variety of different bugs. But this may not be a wise idea in the long run as many of the bugs that dandelions attract are necessary to maintain the ecosystem. Insects such as bees, pollen beetles, moths and butterflies are the most necessary to the proper functioning of the ecosystem. All of these bugs, and many more rely on dandelions for food, so the next time you mow your lawn, it might not be a bad idea to try to spare just a few of your dandelions.

A Unique And Never Before Seen Scorpion Has Been Found In The Grand Canyon

Scorpions have been found at the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. So what is the big deal, right? There are scorpions all over the southwest United States because everyone knows that scorpions dwell in desert land. Yes, there are many scorpions in the southwestern US desert, and that includes the region of Arizona containing the Grand Canyon. However, these recently discovered scorpions are not like any other, since they have no eyes.

These particluar scorpions are refferred to as “pseudoscorpions.” This is because, unlike typical scorpions, these psuedoscpropions have no venomous stinger in addition to not having any eyes. Experts believe that these new and evasive scorpions evolved to not have eyes or a stinger since they have dwelled within pitch dark caves for thousands of years. After a while of living in a cave, the scorpions must not have gotten much use out of their stinger since they could not see, and their prey consists of tiny insects that are too small to impale with a stinger. The cave where this new species of scorpion was discovered is known for containing the greatest amount of cave dwelling organisms than any other cave in the Grand Canyon.

Insects And Humans Share The Same “Tastes”

Mammals sort different chemicals that they taste into different categories, which determines which foods they will eat and which ones they will find disgusting. A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California has determined that insects possess a receptor that allows their bodies to identify savory or umami tastes.

Umami taste is one of the five basic tastes in humans, and some experts believe that insects also possess this ability, but very little research has been put into exploring the way insects perceive certain tastes until now. Researchers have already found a particular umami taste receptor that is common to all insects. A graduate student, Anindya Ganguly, is one of the foremost experts in the field of entomology, and she is hoping to manipulate these neural networks in order to alter an insect’s feeding habits and therefore insect populations could be controlled by human intervention.
